Panning | Depth of Field

Depth of field is a camera effect where you have objects in the foreground plane and background plane, but with only objects in one plane in focus at a time. This helps to direct the eye to what's important in the scene. Of coures in anime, depth of field can be shifted from one plane to another, changing the audience's focus while keeping the same shot.

Changing the depth of field is used often for confrontation scenes between two people. So when one character says or does something dramatic, the depth of field is then changed to see the reaction or response of the other person. Because both characters are in frame at the same time, their tension is intensified. This is commonly used in fight scenes, or dramatic plot turning scenes.
